When Should I Send Out Wedding Invitations?

A comprehensive guide to sending out wedding invitations and what information to include.

Your wedding invitations are arguably one of the most important aspects of your wedding or big event. Why? Because, they actually set the tone for your big day. Your invitations will either say “we’re having a hoedown in the back yard, so bring your overalls and let’s have fun.” This is completely fine if that’s what you’re going for. Or, your invitations will say “we are having beautiful, romantic, memorable wedding and semi-formal or formal attire is required.” Not only that, but your wedding invitations will include crucial information that your guests will need (such as date, time, location, etc.) Be sure not to drop the ball here, your invitations will make all the difference. Below are a list of questions we’re answering for you to make sure you have all of the information you need. Now, on to the reason you’re here reading this.


1. How far in advance should you send out wedding invitations?


If you’re a person who loves to follow the rules and parallels with tradition, then you should send out your invitations 6-8 weeks before your wedding. This gives your guests plenty of time to make the necessary travel arrangements if coming from out of town, and time to request time off if needed. If you’ve decided on a destination wedding instead, then sending them out at least 3 months in advance is your magic number. Most couples will also send out Save the Dates (hopefully you will too) and those are usually sent out 6-8 months in advance. Save the Dates will give your guests basic information such as the date (or at least a month) of your wedding and the city in which it will be held.


2. What date should I choose for the RSVP deadline?


Your RSVP deArline date should be 8 weeks before your wedding date. For example, if your wedding is Saturday, November 10, 2018, then your RSVP “by” date should be September 29, 2018 (6 weeks before your wedding). 6 weeks will allow you the opportunity to gI’ve a final head count to your caterer and finalize your seating chart. If you still have guests that haven’t responded or sent back their RSVP cards (I call them stragglers, but in a good way of course) try threatening them, I mean giving them a quick ring or sending them an email as a friendly reminder. FYI, some people prefer 8 weeks before and I believe that’s completely fine.


3. Is there a such thing as sending wedding invitations out too early?


As far as etiquette, there isn’t REALLY a such thing as sending invitations out too early, but I would err on the side of caution if you’re planning to send them out super early. I say this because naturally most people are procrastinators. I know you're probably thinking ‘hmmm, the earlier I send them out the earlier I will get back the RSVP cards’, nope, not the case. Remember just a few seconds ago when I said naturally most people are procrastinators? It’s true. Instead of your guests sending them back early they instead say “oh, I have plenty of time to send them back...I’ll just wait until next week”, but next week never comes, you know why? You gave them entirely too much time and they simply forgot. On the other hand, if they have just enough time to send them back they’re more likely to drop them in the mail sooner.
